More pseudobulbs for Twinkle!

Can you see it? There's a new pseudobulb growing out of the one closest to the camera! I spotted it a couple of days ago. There was a gap in the leaf and when I looked down, a new pseudobulb!

There were three developed pseudobulbs on Twinkle and all three are developing new pseudobulbs and that means three stalks! Three stalks and it's liking its home enough to keep growing!

Oncidium Catatante update

The pseudobulb is growing bigger. I've noticed that it grows in two steps. First, it gets bigger/taller. Then the pseudobulb fattens up at the base. We're still at the getting bigger/taller phase but it's nice to see. I wonder when I'll see flowers.

Watering orchids

Saturday mornings are when I like to water my orchids. Well, usually, unless I have to leave extremely early in the morning and there's barely time for me to get out of bed, get dressed, and leave. Then I do it on Sundays.

So this is what my kitchen ends up looking like when I get to watering.

One of my other hobbies is quilting/sewing and so I go through jugs of distilled water. I save those jugs for watering my plants since all of the fertilizer instructions tell you how much fertilizer to add to one gallon of water. Easy. Currently, I'm using the MSU Orchid Fertilizer mix from repotme.com.

All of my orchids sit in plastic pots with drainage holes which then sit in containers with no holes that can hold water. I pour the water in and let it sit for 15-30 minutes. There have been a few times when I have forgotten about them and remembered half a day later that they're still sitting in water. Once they're done sitting, I lift the inner pot out to drain, and put them back. Really easy. Any idiot can do it, hence why my orchids are still alive.

Phalaenopsis in bloom!

I wonder what the plural of phalaenopsis is. Both are blooming and it's a lovely view from my desk. They're each sitting on a window sill and I can see them from my desk!

The color on the very first flower to open on Home Depot orchid is starting to fade and it looks like the flower itself is as well. All of the buds are open.

As for Balden's Kaleidoscope, I had concerns about the color on the first flower. It was muddied but it seems to have settled in so that you can see the yellow flowers and the veins stand out. There are a few buds that are still developing so it's not done with flowers yet. There are also a couple of nodes that have growths beyond the little sheath that are just there. I don't know if they plan on continuing development after all of the flowers have opened or if that's it for them. I also wonder how long the flowers will run this time. The last flower show, I had a flower on this guy for 2 years straight!

Tolumnia flowers!

Tolumnia Red Berry

They opened while I was away but I'm glad I didn't miss them!

I wonder at what point, it stops sending up new spikes and starts adding new growth.

More pseudobulbs!

I've actually been away from my plants for a couple of weeks. It's amazing what you find when you step away from staring at them every day!

Twinkle has 2 pseudobulbs! Before I left, only the one closest to the camera was growing. If you look behind, you see a second pseudobulb! This is so exciting! I'll have at least two sprays of flowers when they mature since they only send up stalks from new growth! Twinkle has been sitting in one of the south facing windows and it looks like it likes the added light!

Spring time is growing time

Rosemary, it keeps getting bigger. I didn't fertilize it as much last year. I'm fertilizing at least every other week this year. It's definitely growing much faster with the added nutrients.

Home Depot Orchid in bloom!

Home Depot Orchid is currently sitting on my desk so I can admire all of the blooms. They're almost all open!

He has always been a confidence booster, the one that said to me, "Yes, you can grow orchids!"

Here we go again with Phal Balden's Kaleidoscope

The buds were tiny on this phalaenopsis and then over the course of a weekend, the first bud grew from the size of my pinky to the size of my thumb and a copule of days later, it opened! There are currently two flowers open.

This was the orchid that I bought and had at least one flower open for two years. I'm wondering how long these flowers will last and how long it will keep sending out spikes. We shall see!
